Natural disasters frequently occurring in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), particularly the 2018 Lombok earthquake, have positioned volunteers as key actors in emergency response and social recovery processes. The effectiveness of disaster management is determined not only by resource availability but also by the social empathy of volunteers in understanding and responding to victims’ needs. This study aims to analyze the role of social empathy among disaster volunteers in West Nusa Tenggara through a systematic literature review of national and international scholarly works. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, this study reviewed 30 accredited journal articles focusing on empathy, prosocial behavior, trauma healing, and disaster management. The findings indicate that volunteers’ social empathy significantly enhances psychosocial assistance, strengthens community resilience, fosters social capital, and supports sustainable post-disaster recovery. The discussion highlights that social empathy functions not merely as a moral value but as a strategic competency that can be developed through training, field experience, and cross-sector collaboration. This study concludes that strengthening volunteers’ social empathy is a critical prerequisite for a humanitarian-oriented and sustainable disaster management system in West Nusa Tenggara.
