Abstract

Local traditions are an integral part of social life that contain profound symbolic meanings and function as media for transmitting cultural, social, and spiritual values. Amid modernization and globalization, local traditions face significant challenges yet demonstrate strong adaptability in maintaining community identity and social cohesion. This study aims to analyze the symbolic meanings of local traditions and their roles in shaping and sustaining social life. Employing a qualitative approach with a systematic literature review design, this study examines various national and international scholarly articles on local traditions in Indonesia and other contexts. Data were analyzed using thematic and symbolic interpretative analysis. The findings reveal that local traditions function not only as cultural expressions but also as mechanisms for strengthening social solidarity, collective identity, and moral-spiritual internalization. Moreover, symbolic elements within traditions play a crucial role in maintaining social stability and harmony. This study concludes that preserving local traditions has strategic implications for reinforcing social life and should be integrated into culture-based development policies.
